A group of Veterinary Technology students recently expanded their education beyond the classroom through a hands-on study abroad program in Belize. The immersive experience, which took place in December, allowed participants to apply their skills in a diverse and challenging environment.
The program focused on providing practical care to a wide variety of animals in a country with different resources and prevalent conditions than those typically seen in domestic practice. Students engaged directly in veterinary procedures under professional supervision, gaining invaluable clinical experience. This included working with both companion animals and livestock, offering a broad perspective on animal healthcare.
Faculty emphasized that the trip was designed to enhance clinical competencies while fostering cultural awareness and adaptability. Students were exposed to different approaches in veterinary medicine, preparing them for diverse situations in their future careers. The unique setting provided lessons in resourcefulness and solidified classroom learning through real-world application.
Participants described the experience as transformative, noting that it deepened their understanding of global veterinary challenges and strengthened their practical skills. Such programs highlight the growing emphasis on experiential learning within technical education, aiming to create well-rounded and adaptable graduates ready for the demands of the profession.
