SMUD has introduced a new four-legged worker to its team, and it does not need treats or belly rubs. The utility company unveiled Astro, a robotic dog loaded with advanced sensors and cameras, designed to patrol and protect the city's electrical infrastructure. Unlike a real canine, Astro can crawl through tight tunnels, climb stairs, and operate in extreme heat or hazardous conditions where human workers would be at risk.
The robot's main job is to inspect substations, underground vaults, and other critical equipment for signs of wear, overheating, or damage. By catching small problems early, SMUD hopes to prevent major power outages before they start. Astro can also sniff out gas leaks and detect abnormal vibrations, giving engineers a constant stream of data without needing to send a crew into a dangerous area.
While some might think this sounds like science fiction, SMUD insists the technology is practical and already in use. The robot dog is controlled remotely and can run for hours on a single charge. It is not meant to replace human workers but to keep them safer by handling the most dangerous tasks. For now, Astro will be tested in a few key locations, with plans to expand its patrols if the pilot goes well.
