Researchers at USF Health are putting a low-cost, at-home glaucoma screening device to the test, hoping it can catch the disease earlier and prevent irreversible vision loss. The portable tool, which costs about 42 dollars, allows patients to check their own eye pressure and visual field without a trip to the doctor's office.
Glaucoma is often called the "silent thief of sight" because it damages the optic nerve gradually, and many people don't notice symptoms until significant vision is already gone. Doctors say the device is designed to help patients monitor their condition more frequently, especially those at higher risk due to age, family history, or diabetes.
The screening involves a small handheld unit that measures intraocular pressure and a simple test where the patient responds to light flashes. Early results from the trial suggest the readings are reliable enough to flag potential problems. If a patient's numbers look off, the system prompts them to schedule an in-person exam.
The hope is that this affordable technology will make regular monitoring easier for people who live far from specialists or struggle with the cost of frequent office visits. While it is not meant to replace a full eye exam, the tool could help catch dangerous pressure spikes or vision changes months earlier than standard checkups allow. USF Health plans to expand the trial to more participants over the next year.
