Donald Trump launches tariffs targeting Chinese drone technology

The White House has announced a new round of trade measures aimed squarely at the unmanned aerial vehicle sector, with plans to slap tariffs of up to 100 percent on Chinese-made drones and the key parts used to build them. The move, confirmed by senior administration officials, is part of a broader push to reduce American reliance on Chinese technology in defense and civilian markets.

The new duties will apply to both finished drones and critical components like cameras, sensors, and flight control systems. While the highest rate will hit fully assembled units, parts will face a separate tariff band starting at 30 percent, with the option to go higher depending on the item. The administration says the goal is to force domestic manufacturers to step up production and to give U.S. firms a clearer cost advantage over foreign rivals.

Industry analysts note that Chinese companies currently supply a large share of the global drone market, including many models used by U.S. law enforcement, agriculture, and construction firms. Those buyers will likely face higher prices in the short term. Some U.S. drone makers have already said they are expanding production lines, but they admit that scaling up will take time. The tariffs are set to take effect within 90 days, following a public comment period.
