A Sandy, Utah resident is facing ten felony charges after investigators say he used artificial intelligence to create child sexual abuse material featuring the faces of real children. The arrest marks one of the first major cases in the state where AI tools were used to generate such content from scratch, rather than simply downloading or sharing existing files.
According to court documents, the 42-year-old man was taken into custody earlier this week following a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. That tip led detectives to search his home and digital devices, where they found a large collection of AI-generated images and videos. The faces on the victims were reportedly pulled from publicly available photos of actual minors, including children from his own neighborhood.
Prosecutors say the man used a commercial image generation program, feeding it prompts and reference photos to create realistic but entirely fabricated scenes of abuse. Because the faces belong to real children, the charges are treated as serious as if the abuse actually occurred. Each felony count carries a potential prison sentence of three to fifteen years.
The suspect is being held without bail. His attorney has not commented publicly. A preliminary hearing is set for next month. Law enforcement officials are urging parents to be aware that AI tools are making it easier for offenders to produce new forms of exploitation, and they are working with tech companies to flag and remove such content.
