Analyst Says Tesla Has Solved Self-Driving Tech Puzzle

Piper Sandler analyst Alexander Potter believes Tesla has cracked the code on autonomous driving technology. In a new research note, Potter argued that the company has largely achieved Level 4 self-driving capability in most driving situations, a claim that challenges widespread skepticism among investors and industry experts.

Potter laid out six key factors supporting his view that Tesla's Full Self-Driving system has overcome the main technical barriers that have held back the industry for years. He suggested that Tesla's approach, which relies heavily on camera-based vision systems rather than expensive lidar sensors, has proven more effective than many critics expected.

The analyst acknowledged that doubts remain, particularly around regulatory approval and public acceptance. But he argued that the core technological challenge is now behind Tesla. Level 4 autonomy means the vehicle can handle all driving tasks in specific conditions without human intervention, though it may still have limitations in certain environments like extreme weather or unmapped roads.

Potter's assessment puts him in a more optimistic camp than many of his peers. Other analysts have pointed to accidents involving Tesla's driver-assist features and the company's history of missed deadlines for full autonomy as reasons for caution. Tesla has promised fully self-driving capabilities for years without delivering on those promises.

The note comes at a time when Tesla faces increasing competition from Chinese automakers and traditional car companies racing to develop their own autonomous systems. Waymo and Cruise have already deployed limited robotaxi services in some US cities, though with their own set of challenges and restrictions.

Potter maintained his overweight rating on Tesla shares, suggesting the stock still has room to run if the market begins to price in the value of Tesla's autonomous driving technology. He did not provide a specific price target in the note.
