First-of-its-kind law in New York could block 3D printers from making guns

First-of-its-kind law in New York could block 3D printers from making guns

A groundbreaking new law in New York could soon require 3D printers sold for home or business use to include built-in technology that prevents them from manufacturing firearms. The legislation, the first of its kind in the United States, is designed to close a dangerous loophole that allows individuals to produce untraceable, unserialized weapons known as ghost guns.

Under the proposed measure, manufacturers and retailers would be obligated to install software or hardware blocks that stop the printer from creating key components of a gun, such as the lower receiver. The law would also mandate that sellers verify a buyer's identity and keep records of the transaction, similar to existing requirements for ammunition sales.

Supporters argue the law is a necessary step to keep pace with evolving technology and to prevent criminals from bypassing background checks. They point to the rising number of ghost guns recovered in crimes across the state as evidence of a growing threat. Opponents, however, claim the law infringes on Second Amendment rights and could stifle innovation in the 3D printing industry. They also question how effectively the technology can be enforced, given that many hobbyists can modify or override software restrictions. The bill now awaits the governor's signature to become law.
