The Glenwood Springs City Council voted Thursday to approve a 10-year contract for a comprehensive suite of Axon public safety technology, opting for a bundled system that local officials say will cut costs and speed up emergency response times. The decision, made during a regular council meeting, locks in a package that includes body-worn cameras, in-car video systems, and digital evidence management software for the police department. City administrators argued that purchasing the equipment as a single integrated package from the same vendor would save taxpayer money compared to buying separate systems from different companies over time. The contract also covers ongoing maintenance, software updates, and training for officers. Council members debated the long-term financial commitment but ultimately sided with staff recommendations, citing improved accountability and efficiency. The new technology is expected to be fully operational within the next six months, replacing older equipment that was nearing the end of its service life. Police Chief Kevin Wilson noted that the system will streamline how officers document incidents and share evidence with prosecutors, reducing paperwork and court delays. The deal does not include any weaponized technology, such as tasers or drones, focusing solely on recording and data management tools.
