Nielsen is rolling out a new wearable device designed to track live television viewing with greater precision, and the company expects the technology to significantly boost reported ratings for NFL games. The system, which is slated for deployment as early as the 2026 season, aims to replace the traditional set-top box and diary method with a more passive and accurate measurement tool.
The wearable, worn as a lightweight badge or clipped to clothing, uses audio and motion sensors to detect when a person is actually watching a broadcast. Unlike older systems that rely on a panelist pressing a button or logging their viewing habits, this device can differentiate between a person in the room and a person actively engaged with the screen. Nielsen believes this will capture the large number of viewers who watch games in bars, at parties, or while multitasking at home.
The NFL stands to benefit the most from this shift. Current ratings often miss viewers in public venues or those who have the game on in the background. By capturing these "out-of-home" and ambient viewers, the new wearable could push game viewership numbers higher by double-digit percentages. Advertisers, who pay billions for commercial slots during NFL broadcasts, are expected to welcome the change, as it provides a more complete picture of actual audience size. Nielsen has not yet announced the cost of the program or how it will recruit panelists for the new system, but the company is positioning the wearable as the future of television measurement.
