The Real Danger of AI in Schools: Losing Foundational Knowledge

A new book on artificial intelligence in K-12 classrooms warns that while "deskilling" gets most of the attention, a far more serious threat is emerging. The authors argue that the potential loss of foundational knowledge among students could have lasting consequences that go beyond simply losing the ability to do math without a calculator or write without spellcheck.

The problem, they explain, is not just that students might forget how to perform certain tasks. It is that they may never develop the underlying mental frameworks that those tasks build. When a child learns long division, they are not just learning to divide. They are building number sense, understanding place value, and developing logical step-by-step thinking. When a student writes an essay from scratch, they practice organizing thoughts, building arguments, and finding their own voice.

AI tools that do these things for students can bypass that entire developmental process. The authors describe a classroom where a student asks an AI to summarize a chapter, generate a thesis, and write a first draft. The student might produce a passing assignment, but they have not engaged with the material in any meaningful way. They have not struggled with the text, wrestled with confusion, or made their own connections.

The book calls this "foundational erosion" and says it is worse than simple deskilling because it is invisible. A student who loses the ability to do mental math knows they lost it. But a student who never developed the cognitive habits that come from sustained, difficult work may not even know what they are missing. The authors urge educators to think carefully about when and how AI is used, not to ban it, but to protect the learning that happens through struggle.
