US Technology Companies Should Keep Operating in China

American technology companies face growing pressure to pull out of China, but doing so would be a strategic mistake. When U.S. firms operate in China, they capture significant revenue from the world's second-largest economy. More importantly, they gain direct exposure to cutting-edge technologies and consumer trends that emerge from one of the most dynamic digital markets on the planet.

Staying in China also allows U.S. companies to extend their own technology ecosystems. Products like operating systems, cloud platforms, and enterprise software gain deeper adoption when American brands are physically present. This creates long-term lock-in and standards that benefit U.S. competitiveness globally.

If Washington forces a broad exit, Chinese firms will fill the vacuum. They would gain even greater scale to develop and refine their own ecosystems, from mobile payments to artificial intelligence. Over time, this could shift global technology standards away from American influence entirely.

The real risk is not that U.S. companies lose a market. It is that they lose the ability to shape how technology evolves worldwide. Competing in China is difficult, but retreating is far more dangerous for American innovation and long-term economic strength.
