Boeing retains access to Wisk's autonomous flight technology in latest sell-off

Boeing has completed the sale of its autonomous air taxi unit Wisk Aero, but the aerospace giant will still have access to Wisk's self-flying technology. The buyer is Archer Aviation, a company that was once seen as Wisk's direct competitor in the race to bring electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft to market.

The deal, announced August 10, 2026, caught some industry observers off guard given the history between the two firms. Wisk and Archer were locked in a legal dispute over trade secrets just a few years ago. That case was settled, and now the two have come together in a transaction that gives Archer full ownership of Wisk's assets and intellectual property.

Wisk had been developing a four-seat autonomous eVTOL aircraft with backing from Boeing. The unit was seen as a key part of Boeing's strategy to enter the urban air mobility market. Now that strategy shifts to a partnership model rather than direct ownership. Archer plans to integrate Wisk's technology into its own aircraft lineup, which is already further along in flight testing.

The sale is expected to close by the end of the third quarter, pending regulatory approvals.
